  • billing for fireground services?

Our council is interested in billing for fire suppression activities, extrication, false alarms, etc...What has your experience been with regards to public backlash, collection, etc...has it been worth it?

We get addition payment if we respond to a bush or forest fire outside of our district. The Forestry Ministry pays of for this. Because there are some areas between fire districts Forestry is responcible for them. However, because a fire department can get there fast and with a little luck, knock it down, we get toned out to them. Forestry crews often take up to an hour to arrive. For bush or forest fire calls inside of our district we don't get anything. on the last call we attended like this we recieved $400.00 per vehicle and $400.00 per vehicle crew per hour. So basically $800.00 an hour per unit. Not bad considering we were on scene for something 4 hours with 2 trucks!!!
This money gets placed into our budget as an unexpected income. The running joke is that when ever we need a little extra money for something all we need to do is light a fire just outside of our district
We don't get anything extra for responding to Mutial aid calls because we have agreements with all of our neighboring departments... however, it normally costs the host department a round.
However, we did respond to on call that was for mutial aid, but it was a special event. A popane tanker carrying 30 000 litres of propane rolled and was leaking. We were on scene for almost 20 hours and the highway (the Trans-Canada-Highway) was closed for almost 22. In an average 24 hour period more then 38 000 vehicles travel through our district. For some reason, the department that called us out for help managed to get it classified as a provincial emergency, (or something along the same line) therefore our members are getting compinsated for the hours in pay, along with a little something extra into our budget.
This happenedin July and we haven't seen a thing yet.... but they keep telling us it is in the works.
Those are the only two circumstances that our department gets extra pay at calls.

Oh, by the way, my department is 100% volunteer, (ever the officers and chief), so the members don't get anything anyway.
