DOES PA HAVE AN AGE FOR JRS. TO GO INTO A BURNING BLDG. AND ALSO WORK WITH POWER TOOLS.

  • #2
I believe the national age to go into a burning building is 18. The exception is that at the age of 16 you can enter a burn building in a training scenario...but it has to be noncombustible in design. As far as power tools, I believe the age is 16. Be safe!

Junior firefighter activities in PA are governed by the so-called "child labor laws". If your department doesn't have a copy, they can get one from the PA Dept. of Labor & Industry or from their insurance carrier. Generally speaking, entry into hazardous atmospheres and use of power equipment outside of training is restricted to people 18 years of age and older. The law is very specific on many points and it's all spelled out in a special section covering junior firefighters (other sections tell you when you can be employed, what kinds of jobs are off limits, etc.).
