  • Looking for FF I/II Instructor Guide... Anyone?

I will be leading some new recruits on my crew through the IFSTA Essentials book, going through the Firefighter I/II exam based on NFPA 1001; 2002 edition. Does anyone happen to have an instructors guide they would be willing to allow me to use? Sure, I could draw one up on my own, but with many other projects going on I would prefer not to have to. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance...

If YOU or your DEPARTMENT are willing to spend some money ($130): http://www.ifsta.org/html/catalog/37...159680173.5050

Of course, I think asking around locally is probably the best (cheapest) idea!
Do it because you love it, not because you love being seen doing it.

Yea, personally I don't like most anything IFSTA publishes, but you have to use what the state is creating the tests from. I have used some of the Davis Publishing (Alabama Fire College) things in the past and they have worked out very well.

The Missouri Division of Fire Safety has an excellent instructor guide based on the IFSTA essentials manual. You can get their contact info at the following link:

I have used this guide in numerous I & II classes. They update it every few years.

If I remember correctly that's the one published by Jones & Bartlett

The Thompson Delmar system is also good - that's what we went to from the IFSTA system after reviewing both.

firefighter1023 - contact either of these folks (or both *G*) and ask for a review copy (i.e. free) of their Firefighter Essentials Instructor materials.

Note - thay have 2 versions of the student manual - one includes the sections on Haz-Mat and oner does not.

They also have a nice reference site:

Thanks for all the help everyone. I do appreciate it very much.

              N2DFire:

I do prefer Delmar personally, unfortunetly our state stick with IFTSA. I will certainly give both publishers a call. Do they normally have evaluation copies for most of their materials? I was thinking about some of the IFSTA DVD Series products as well. Are these review copies full editions? Or just partial? Sorry for the questions, I'm sure this is more up the line for the sales reps. Again, thanks for the help/advice.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I seldom get a chance to get in the forums on the weekends.
To answer your questions - it will vary by publisher on their policies but in general. . .
                - Review Copies are exactly the same as the purchased ones.
                - Review copies are available for just about everything (I even got a review Copy of a Spanish EMS tranlation field guide)
                - Some items they will "give" you and some they will only loan you for a short time to review - after that you either have to purchase it or return it. I'm guessing something as high dollar as the DVD products would fit in that category. On the up side the publisher will normally cover return shipping.

I understand what you mean about the state sticking with IFSTA, however you can still use the instructor resource material from the other 2 programs (test / quizzes, skills stations, images from the powerpoint image banks, etc.) for your own training or as a supplament to the IFSTA program.

I will say that I have NOT reviewed anything new that IFSTA has put out recently, but I have heard that the introduction of these other programs has been a big eye opener to IFSTA. They are no longer the only game in town and I look for the quality of their program to make a huge (and long overdue) leap soon.

Best of luck and feel free to e-mail me if you have more questions and need a faster answer.

                  N2DFire;

Again, thanks so much. I contacted Jones and Bartlett today and have some materials on the way. I wasn't able to get ahold of anyone at Delmar just yet. Just out of curiosity I contacted IFSTA to see what they said about review/evaluation copies, they acted as if they didn't know what I was talking about/asking. But as you said, I'm sure it does vary from company to company as far as policy. Thus far Jones and Bartlett seem to have no problem with comp. copies or review copies. Thanks for the help and advice, it's gotten me on the right direction I do believe.
