L.I. fireman is killed as truck pins him

A Long Island firefighter was crushed to death yesterday when he was pinned between the top of a rescue truck and a firehouse ceiling beam as a colleague started to move the rig, cops said.
Volunteer firefighter Paul Brady, 42, suffered internal injuries in the 10 a.m. accident at the Malverne Fire Department firehouse.

"It's a very heavy loss," said Malverne Fire Chief Michael Latronico. "He was the type of guy everybody liked."

Brady was initially conscious when rushed by an ambulance already at the firehouse to Nassau County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 2 p.m.

"The whole department and the village are devastated," said Malverne Fire Commissioner Jim Callahan, who also serves as Malverne's deputy mayor.

Callahan said Brady, a volunteer firefighter for six years, was preparing for a drill by loading supplies on top of the rescue truck parked in the firehouse.

Robert Meyer, 58, jumped behind the wheel, unaware that Brady was on top, and began to drive the truck out of the firehouse, Callahan said.

Brady was crushed when he was pinned between the top of the truck and a ceiling beam, Callahan said.

The Nassau County homicide squad ruled the incident "a tragic accident," a police spokesman said.

"He's very upset," a police spokesman said of the driver. "He's in counseling right now."

Colleagues said Brady, who worked full time as an insurance broker, is survived by his wife, Lisa.

"He was a great guy," Malverne firefighter Dave Gildea said. "He was a happy-go-lucky kind of guy.

"Everybody here loved working with him."

Firefighters from neighboring towns gathered at the grief-stricken firehouse last night to express condolences and help hang black bunting outside.

"He really enjoyed both being a fireman and being a friend to all the guys," Gildea said.

"It's like losing a member of your family."

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Malverne FD and FF Brady's family. RIP Brother.

Firefighter Crushed While Working On Truck

    POSTED: 7:13 am EDT July 31, 2006

    MALVERNE, N.Y. -- It's being called a tragic accident.

A volunteer firefighter in New York state was crushed to death between his firehouse and a rescue truck being driven by another firefighter.

Authorities in Malverne, in Long Island's Nassau County, said Paul Brady, 42, was doing routine maintenance on top of a Malverne Fire Department heavy-duty truck Sunday morning.

A Fire Department spokesman said Brady fell off the truck when another firefighter, not realizing he was on it, drove forward.

Spokesman David Gildea said Brady was wedged between the truck and the building. He suffered massive injuries and was taken by an ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 p.m. Sunday.

Gildea said Brady was a great fireman and a great friend to the entire department during his six years of volunteering.

The driver of the truck was not charged or cited. Investigators believe Brady's death was an accident.

The Nassau Highway Patrol Bureau performed a safety check on the rescue truck and then returned it to service.
