  • Firefighter Ronald Holmes

My sincere condolences go to the family and friends....also the FF's, struggling to deal with this terrible loss.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - City firefighters struggled Thursday
to accept the death of 18-year veteran Ronald Holmes in a traffic
    accident.
"We had a lot of tears last night," Assistant Fire Chief Chip
    Volcek said.
Holmes, 43, was driving a patient from Great Plains Medical
Center to a Lincoln hospital Wednesday when a semitrailer hit the
ambulance from behind, slamming it into the back of a beer truck on
    Interstate 80.
The ambulance and beer truck had either slowed or stopped for
construction, but the semi was not able to stop in time to avoid
the crash, Seward County Deputy Sheriff Randy Brown said.
Holmes died at the scene. Fire Lt. Patrick Richards, 47, was
riding with Holmes and was in critical condition Thursday at
    BryanLGH Hospital in Lincoln.
The truck driver, a 48-year-old Vinton, Iowa, man was arrested
    for misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide.
It may be the department's only death in the line of duty,
certainly the first death in recent memory, said Volcek, who has
been with the department for 17 years.
"I have never heard of anyone else," Volcek said.
Holmes was married and had a high school-age daughter, Volcek
    said.
He was a popular man and will be missed, Volcek said.
"I think of Ron as just a small-town type of individual,"
Volcek said. "He just would help you, give the shirt off his
    back."
Crisis counselors were available for the department's 42 sworn
officers and 36 volunteers, Volcek said.
More than 30 firefighters took advantage of the counseling
    Wednesday night, he said.
