NEW YORK (AP) - At a funeral for the youngest firefighter to die
in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Mayor Michael Bloomberg
said firefighters, police officers and emergency workers who died
in the attacks should be identified individually in any ground zero
memorial.
Several hundred firefighters applauded at the mayor's remarks at
the funeral of Michael Cammarata, 22, at Our Lady Star of the Sea
Catholic Church on Staten Island on Saturday.
Bloomberg said that visitors to the memorial should "be able to
read their names, know what they did, appreciate their heroism, be
inspired by their sacrifice and ensure they are designated as role
models for the next generation who will protect us all."
Cammarata was last seen at the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel
on Sept. 11 in a rescue effort. The hotel was destroyed when the
twin towers collapsed. He had only been with the fire department
four months.
His family had been waiting nearly 21 months for information on
his remains. But instead of waiting any longer, they buried a vial
of blood the 22-year-old had donated.
