          Round 2, only 22 grants?

Good grief. After three weeks of waiting we finally receive an announcement and there are only 22 grants? They have $100,000,000's to allocate and today's announcement barely scratches the surface. Under the first announcement there were 9 pages of awards. Today's announcement doesn't even fill one page.

Sure, I am grateful for the DHS grants. Afterall, this is an opportunity for support leading to departmental development that would be almost impossible without outside aid. But why does it seem that this year is a complete mess?

I emailed my senators and received speedy replies but I have little hope anything substantive will change either now or in the future.

I have heard the reports about money being left over from 2005 that needed to be allocated before 2006 could be distributed. Fine. But does it take an entire government agency to grind to a halt in order to clean up last year's budget?

And has anyone seen the 2006 FP&S guidance documents?

          We are a captive audience.

If you're waiting until 4 days before Election Day to determine who to vote for, that's pretty sad. Yes it's good PR, but do you think it really makes a difference at this point?

As the saying goes for how the military functions: "Hurry up and wait" No guidance documents available yet.

I agree that 22 awards are better than none. It is still pretty sad & pitiful after all the delays and waiting

These were supposedly the ones that were 'forgotten' for Round 1. So if it weren't for that, Round 2 wouldn't have been until next week.

Which is rumored to be larger than planned to make up for lost time, but we'll have to see it when it happens. Like the others I'm glad it's at least something. I'm happy to see the 1199As and questions coming out within 24 hours of each other too. Looks like someone finally took the emergency brake off.

did you see this on the Firehouse Grants page? Why some every week?

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security today announced awards for the Fiscal Year 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) awarding 22 grants to fire departments throughout the United States.

Announcements are planned for every Friday through the end of the year at approximately 6 a.m. There are approximately 5,000 grants worth $485-490 million to be awarded.

Because to award that many at one time would overwhelm the staff and we wouldn't be able to spend any money any faster anyway.

Maing all of the awards at once would overwhelm the staff and overwhelm the vendors. A manufacturer only has so much production time. The salesmen can't possibly get around to everyone, nor could trucks be built any faster.

The waiting is tough, but as long as it happens, I can live with it.

A neighbor received an award from 2005 in the very last round on Sept. 29. They had previously received a Dear John letter in December 2005. Goes to show it ain't over until its really over.

Don't forget they have until October 1 of 2007 to spend this money.
