If you have a lot of State DNR area you may be able to get a state grant to help pay for a ranger and associated skid unit (if you are going to use it for firefighting). We have a large game preserve on the north end of our district and we had a matching grant for our ranger from the state DNR.

Spoke too soon. In today's mail there was the ominous looking USSTC envelope with the Dear John inside. Working on '07. Good luck to everyone else.

Here's a couple of quotes from their press release.

The company expects to award an additional 18 Rangers before the end of the year.
Operation Ranger continues the unfortunate task of notifying those organizations not selected this year. We encourage these organizations to submit a 2007 Operation Ranger application, now available on this web page
As Greenacres pointed out, you should be polishing up your grant application for '07. With DJ's still going out and the remainder of the Rangers to be given out by the end of the year, you don't want to be scrambling to complete the application package.

They anticipate 18 more announced this year--so you're still in the running. Can't hurt to work on the '07 app though.
