  • A THREAT To Grants............

Please read the "NFPA SCBA Standard......" thread in the "Firefighting" Forum. THIS is way too much interference from the NFPA.

Before everyone panics, the situation has been clarified in the other forum. Since the new CRBN and voice amp requirements will not be in place in NFPA 1981 until February 2007, you can still buy SCBA that meets the 2002 edition without the CBRN additions. If you can buy the new SCBA with what you are awarded, then definitely do it to be ahead of the game. But it is not required at this time.

For 2007 AFG you will need to quote and purchase 2007 edition SCBA. Not 2006. This is no different than any other year in having to purchase equipment that meets the CURRENT standard, not future. So unless they up the PPE limits to allow purchasing to the 2006 standard with the DRDs, you'll either have to come out of pocket or purchase without the DRDs since the new standard wasn't in place at the time of application. That's when the standards need to be met. If they aren't in place then they can always be changed, that's why the DRDs won't be required on 2006 PPE awards. They could drop CBRN before February, so you can't argue for extra money to buy them now. I don't think it will happen, but stranger things have.

when we got our SCBA in the FY05 AFG, went ahead and got msa packs with all the bells and whistles. CBRN, icmtx integrated pass, hud, clearcommand communication system. everything is wireless, its great i figured eventually things like CBRN would become the standard, might as well get it while we're not really paying for it

If you asked for enough to get the newer SCBA then it's definitely worth it to do so. But if folks didn't ask for enough money, then there's no need to shell out more out of pocket to buy them if you don't want them. Certainly people can overmatch, but it's not needed to make the new standard.
