I hate to post this here because it sounds like a solicitation, but it's really a defensive move to avoid a last minute bombardment of emails like I got in the last week before the deadline this year, requesting my help with applications. I spent many 4 hour nights trying to help everyone that I could, but of course, time is limited when you gotta to to work to pay the bills. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately if they got the award without my help, I could not get to almost 40 requests. Feelings of guilt come easy to me, and I felt bad for a long time that I couldn't offer anything to those people. I'd like to avoid that for the 2004 program.
As I said way back when on this forum, I will not take down my web site, and I will never charge for anyone to learn what they can from it. It contains narratives from many people that were generous enough to allow me to post it for others to learn from. I have been keeping count of who has been helped and how much they've been helped, just as a litmus test on whether or not it really helped. Maybe more than who is listed on the page have been helped, but I've only posted those that have told me directly that the web site helped. Lots of people have told me they learned enough to write a successful grant themselves, maybe you can too if you're not sure already. Link: www.firegraphics.org/grants.htm
If you would like to add your narrative to my site, I will gladly post it for you for others to learn from.
Here's the part that may sound like a solicitation and for that I apologize: I have already had many requests to assist departments for 2004 projects. Some have in mind what they want, others don't. In order for me to properly analyze each departments situation and assess their needs from the outside in order to formulate their best chance for success, it will take a lot of my time. I spent almost 60 hours on our application for this year, between research and all of the drafts. I've always been taught that the best way to avoid crunch time is proper planning. I do not want to get into the position of attempting to half-*** something for someone. To many people need the grants that badly that I'd feel even worse if I helped put in something 2nd rate for them.
So, if you would like more personal help than my web site and these forums provide, please contact me by email offline ASAP and I will give you all of the details. The biggest one: it won't cost the department any money up front, or at all, even if the grant is successful. I wasn't raised to take money for something I didn't do, and too many need the money so badly that I couldn't sleep taking it from the department. Again, I apologize for the appearance of a solicitation, and I don't mean to sound conceited thinking I'll get that many requests, but with the number of emails in my inbox already, I may get buried again and not be able to help. I became a volunteer to help and it gets me when I can't. Just the way the Big Guy upstairs made me.
Anyway, stay safe, and here's to hoping y'all need to figure out a different project for next year because this one got funded.
Brian
