  • Hose Grant

    Hi All,

We have been fortunate enough to attain funding for SCBA's in 08 and after sending members to Kurt's class at PBS Coals in 09, we were awarded a gear project with the 09 AFG. We are now looking at developing a hose project for this year's AFG. After reading the forums, I have a good idea about talking points to discuss in the narrative (would certainly take more suggestions) but have a couple questions.

    1. Is it possible to go after supply line and attack line at the same time? Looking at replacing our 4" (purchased late 70s/early 80s in several stages) on 3 engines while at the same time replacing attack line on 2 of our 3 engines (1 3/4 and 2 1/2). Were able to use the PA State Grant to update 1 3/4 and 2 1/2 hose on one of our engines.

    2. Where does hose testing come into play and would/should a tester be included in the grant?

    Yes

My 2010 grant was for ISO/NFPA load of hose for both pumper and LDH for hose wagon. All was 20-35yr old.

Like most areas of AFG, including the equipment to properly store/maintain is a good plan. I had hose tester, attack line hose jackets. Attack and LDH hose clamps and washers, and LDH bridges. Large packing list of LDH appliances for relay pumping ops. Also a quick attack monitor for each truck. And misc adapters, Firemans Friend tanker fill valves for our tankers, and Turbodrafts for supply ops.

As we don't have one (and few in the area) a TIC. Thinking seems to be if your grant makes it to peer review they agree that a TIC is a critical piece of FF safety equipment and you should have one. Approved.

Also need to replace handhelds and pagers with Narrowband equipment and a couple mobiles so thru that in and approved.

      1) Yes

      2) Yes, a hose tester should be requested as part of the project. NFPA 1962 Standard for the Inspection, Care, and Use of Fire Hose, Couplings, and Nozzles and the Service Testing of Fire Hose....requires hose to be tested at least annually.

in my hose or 'water supply' that was awarded a couple months ago, I included how my village board would not allow me to submit an application for a new tanker because they couldn't afford the stupid insurance payments and so I am stuck with a 1972 converted military GMC 6 x 6 that is so well known.

Now I didn't get nasty in the narrative, but I did hit on that as a predominate motive for asking for new water attack hose and nozzels and LDH to help increase our firefighting effectiveness.

          It got awarded though.

Am beginning to think about including within the narrative a little more subliminal message about not getting the support I need from our elected officials in protecting our citizens and neighbors.

With the way the city governments are beginning to support efforts to eliminate collective bargaining involving public service entities, maybe that message will make a positive impression on a professional FF who is peer reviewing my application.
