  • 2011 AFG help

I'm trying to get ready for the 2011 AFG and thinking of a few ideas to put in for. Tell me what you guys think? We need to replace our large diameter hose on 6 trucks. and also many of our nozzles and hand tools are from the 60's. Would this be something worth putting in for? Also, what about pre plan software with haz mat add ons, and maybe future GPS for apparatus apps

If you talk to some of the nozzle companys they might send you a few for free...I know we got like 6 nozzles for free...we aren't running but 3 trucks, but that replaced some of our older nozzles. This is just an idea and I'd have to get the company we went through to see what they were, but they gave us like 3 pistal grips and 3 regular nozzles. So that might be a good way of looking at nozzles. Just thought I might say something bout that.

A water supply project is an eligible item under AFG ops grant & many departments have been successful at getting funding.

Some random questions that will need to be answered in your application.

Call volume of working fires and population.
Age and condition of LDH you currently have?
Do you complete annual hose testing and have been having repeated failure to pass certification?
Have you had hose failures in the past ?
Why have you not replaced a little each year if it's failing?
Why do you need to replace 6 trucks worth of LDH at the same time ?
How much do you carry on each truck ?
Rural , suburban, or urban ?
Do you have hydrants or rely on tanker shuttle for water supply?
Are you increasing the size of existing LDH from say 3 or 4 inch up to 5 inch in order to increase the available water flows or to maintain conformity and interoperability with mutual aid departments?

These are some of the questions that need to be addressed in your app.
Also if you are doing a water supply project be sure to include portable monitors and fittings.
I personally would not add in additional hand tools and probably not even the smaller handline nozzles as part of the same app.

Some do OK with the shopping cart approach, but keeping the app focused on a single complete solution to a given NEED is the best way to score well and keep the cost benefit ratio in line with other applicants scores.

If you can get the LDH replaced under AFG then you can probably afford to buy some relatively cheap nozzles by comparison from your budget. Use the AFG for the bigger ticket items that you can't afford.
