  • Grants other then AFG

I don't know if this is the right thread but I'll ask.

Does anyone know of other grants available nationwide?

There used to be a Betty Crocker Grant.

Wal-Mart gives grants and have been extremely gracious.

Just wondering if anyone has tried to tap Target, K-Mart......ect.

Also if you have had success with anywhere else.

Well I will suggest your local utility companies as a possibility for a grant. A few in my area do have grants but there are specifics that they require/need to approve them.

National chains, you could try Subway. I've tried twice with limited success. They did donate a sub platter to our open house event.

I think some railroads might also have grants for fire departments. I remember receiving a few but we could not apply since none of their lines ran through our area.

If you are a 501c3 non-profit there are a lot more opprotunities for you but some of the others that do exist are:

      Firehouse Subs
      Into the Fire
Most insurance companies have grant programs
      Many railroad companies
      Many power companies
      E-One engine giveaway

      Just to name a few.

Yeah I forgot to mention the Utilities and Railroads. We have a major rail line running through our response area but have had very limited success due to the railroad having to pay damages for a large anhydrous leak about 120 mile to the north west of us.

For the most part our utilities have been pretty good. We do have a liquid pipeline that runs through our area that has been extremely tough. About every other year they request we come out and practice with them (for their insurance audit). After our last 2 request were turned down we simply told them we are busy and to try and contact us later.

A few others I forgot to mention:

Smokeless Tobacco Polaris Ranger (don't know if it still exists)

State Forestry (has several 50% cost share and Federal Government excess property) great way to get a chassis for appartatus.

Have not tried insurance companies. In North Dakota we have a Fire and Tornado reserve fund that all insurance premiums pay a percentage to and every fire department in the state receives a percentage of (figured by valuation and ISO rating of you coverage area). So I am not sure what kind of response there would be.

Its Altria now instead of USSTC on the Polaris program. It was administered last year by Gifts In Kind.

That is good to know. Will have to present it to our group again and see if they want to pursue it, we have tried before (actually when it was JD Gators they were giving).

Yep I hope they decide to do it again, it was touch and go last year but, boy I have helped a lot of departments win them I hope it never goes away. Its an item tough to come by any other way.

If you are in a rural area, check with your USDA Rural Development region office. They offer 75/25 grants (loans). They have a reserve on how much a fire or ambulance service gets, but it's worth a shot.

Yeah I have dealt with with USDA. The biggest problem is our mayor uses USDA for everything and because of that we usually have issues because they feel they give us (local government) plenty.

Do you have any agricultural businesses in your community? Cenex-Harvest States (CHS), Simplot, Farm Credit Services, etc. may have charitable giving programs.

About the funding from the Fire and Tornado funding. Actually it is the ND Insurance Dept. that collects and distributed the insurance premium monies.

Does your response area have any federally owned waterfall/wildlife acres? If so, indicate this when applying for fire grant funding from the ND Forest Service. This may help to justify recieving funding from those grant programs.
