    LOS ANGELES, CA:
    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

On Friday, October 31, 2003 at 2038 Hours (8:38 PM PST), fifteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, three LAFD Chief Officer Command Teams and various support units, all under the direction of LAFD Battalion Commander Gary Clark responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 980 South Arapahoe Street in the MacArthur Park area. The first Company to arrive reported a very large three-story Victorian residence heavily involved with fire. Firefighters made forcible entry and quickly accomplished vertical ventilation allowing handlines to be used in mounting an aggressive and well-coordinated assault on the flames from within 4,868 square-foot wood frame building. Despite oppressive volumes of fire, a tenacious firefight and simultaneous search of the 95 year-old building was efficiently accomplished. The fire was fully extinguished in just 48 minutes, and there were no injuries. Fire damage was nominally estimated at $250,000 and represents a total loss of the structure, which was previously scheduled for demolition. The cause of the fire is categorized as incendiary and is attributed to illegal burning within the structure by trespassers or transients.

    http://www.fallenbrothers.com

Fallen Brothers was founded by two brother FDNY firefighters, Brian and Kevin Shea.

Kevin, while assigned to E331 in Howard Beach as a probationary firefighter (with only 3 weeks in the firehouse), the Captain in his firehouse, Vincent Fowler, died while operating at a fire in a private residence. Alongside his firehouse members, Kevin went to the aid of the Fowler family and assisted in the distribution of T-shirts to raise money solely for the widow and three young daughters. While selling shirts at festivals and events, he noted that it would be a good idea to sell these shirts on the Internet, increasing sales and bringing in more money for the family.

Kevin enlisted the help of his brother, Brian (Ladder 61), to help design a website for Capt. Fowler's Memorial T-Shirts. Brian and Kevin also saw the need for a location to sell the shirts of all the other brothers who had died on the job.

The Fallen Brothers Foundation was setup, with a website - FallenBrothers.com. The simple premise: all proceeds from the sale of the shirts will go to the funds of the individual families. Administration costs will be kept to a bare minimum by low cost Web marketing and word of mouth.

In the year 2000, the first full year of operation, over $11,000 was distributed.

Before the September 11th attack, the Foundation was on it's modest way to double the first year's amount raised.

September 11th changed things. With Kevin involved in the collapse (the only survivor from his firehouse and Battalion), and a flood orders and support from all over the world as everyone wanted to help the families, we had to temporarily suspend sales. We have now restructured the order process to be able to handle the large volume of orders. We are happy to say that by the end of October, we were back online, better than ever.

We will be adding more items to the site as new designs come available.

We thank everyone for their continued support, now, and more importantly in the future as the families move forward.

    -Brian

COLLIERS MANSION TYPE CONDITION - a term you hear the FDNY use a lot of the time.

So... What exactly is a "colliers mansion" type condition?

The term is derived from a turn of the century mansion owned by the Collier brothers. They were quite eccentric and obsessed with collecting things to the point that the mansion was filled with junk from wall to wall, floor to ceiling. To avoid eviction they booby trapped the place. One of the brothers fell ill. The other brother took to caring for him. While he was returning to the sick room he fell victim to one of his own booby traps and died. The sick brother died of dehydration waiting for him. It took the fire department days to recover the bodies.

The term is used to describe any dwelling that is similarly filled with trash, making operations difficult and extensive.
