    AUSTRALIA - 29/10/2003 at 04:04PM
    BUSHFIRE AT GRAHAMSTOWN

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighters from Port Stephens and Hunter Water Corporation staff are battling a bushfire in Hunter Water Corporation land, south of the Grahamstown Dam.

"The fire started as a result of a dumped car that was set alight and the fire has since spread to the adjacent bush,'' Superintendent Alan Gillespie, Rural Fire Service Zone Manager for the Lower Hunter said.

"We currently have nine appliances and thirty firefighters on scene, aircraft on the way, and are more ground support as our efforts to control the blaze are being hampered by strong winds and spot fires,'' he said.

"The fire is impacting the vicinity of the RAAF base and Williamtown airport, being pushed by 70km winds from the west northwest." Superintendent Gillespie said.

The fire is causing a significant amount of smoke and has burned over 100ha since beginning at around 2pm.
