The Chicago Firefighter's Best Friend
"The Chicago Firefighter’s Best Friend" will be the first book to document the role and tradition of Chicago firedogs through real life stories, history, and photography. It will appeal to firefighters, dog lovers, and Chicagoans. We hope to have over 200 pictures and at least 100 firedog narratives assessing the important role dogs have played and continue to play in Chicago firehouses. A percentage of the proceeds generated from book sales will be donated to a charitable organization which assists victims of fires.

LAS VEGAS FIRE & RESCUE
DATE/TIME: 102203/1530PDT
RELEASE: 03-163
BATTERIES IN SMOKE DETECTORS SHOULD BE CHANGED THIS WEEKEND
It's that time of year when clocks will be turned back to standard time and it is also the time that the batteries in smoke detectors should be changed. The batteries in smoke alarms should be changed at least once a year.
Just about EVERY smoke detector in the Las Vegas Valley has a battery in it. Even the smoke detectors in new homes have a battery backup system in case of a power failure. Even if the smoke alarm did not activate during the past year, it is a good idea to replace the battery anyways.
Smoke detectors receive their power in three ways:
The first smoke detectors for homes were powered by a large battery, which later made way for the small 9-volt transistor battery. In the early 1980's studies showed that nearly 40% of smoke alarms checked in homes were found with dead or missing batteries. So wired-in smoke alarms became popular. But some fire officials were concerned that the smoke alarms would not activate in case of a power failure, so in the early 1990's codes were amended to require wired in smoke alarms with a battery back up supply. The majority of the homes in the Las Vegas Valley have the combination smoke detector, but many older homes, those built prior to 1990 may still have battery operated smoke alarms only. Regardless, both types should have
their battery replaced.
Some things to remember about smoke detectors: check the smoke alarm at least once a week by pressing the "test button" on it to ensure it is properly operating and clean the smoke alarm at least once a month to ensure the openings on the detector are not clogged with dust or dirt. It the smoke detectors begins to "chirps" or very short beeps, this indicates the battery is weak and should be changed immediately.
Smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years.
Free smoke alarms are available to families and individuals who cannot afford one. Call Las Vegas Fire & Rescue at 383-2888 for more information.
Smoke alarms have saved dozens of lives of the past years in Las Vegas. Be sure your family is protected by changing the batteries in your smoke alarm this weekend.
