    Helping Our Own

    "firefighter helping firefighter"

There are literally thousands of fire departments, nationwide, that are struggling to keep their doors open on a shoestring budget. Many don't have personal protective clothing, breathing apparatus, or even helmets to protect these courageous firefighters. Some are fighting structure fires in blue jeans and sweatshirts, and some of the poorer departments don't even have fire engines, they have to fight structure fires with a brush truck. That is unacceptable when larger departments are destroying good usable equipment, on a daily basis, which could be donated to these needy departments.

    - Groundbreaking for new Fire Station 77, October 24

It opened just six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, a tiny Fire Station in what could then be called a remote section of LA's San Fernando Valley: http://www.lafire.com/stations/FS077/FS077.htm

For more than six decades, it has proudly served the diverse needs of our City and its people. Featuring an apparatus bay that can barely hold one modern Fire Engine, much less both the Engine and Paramedic Ambulance now assigned, Old Fire Station 77: http://eng.lacity.org/projects/fire_bond/FS77.htm

...is soon to give way to a truly modern facility that will better serve the LAFD's Mission in protecting the burgeoning Sun Valley, Shadow Hills and LaTuna Canyon communities: http://eng.lacity.org/projects/fire_bond/FS77new.htm

Please join members of the LAFD in this historic groundbreaking, as we begin the construction phase of the first of many Fire Department project approved by Proposition F of November 2000. With intense oversight and ironclad project management, these LAFD projects have welcomed public input and review. To learn more about the many LAFD projects that are a part of Prop F, please visit: http://www.lafd.org/propf.htm

...or see our detailed monthly status report (in PDF format) at:

...or better yet, *PLEASE JOIN US* at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 24th, when we break ground at:

Still need advice or assistance? We always welcome you to visit your Neighborhood Fire Station: http://www.lafd.org/visit.htm

    =-=-=-=

    - LAFD Evening Recruitment Event in Downtown LA, October 28

You've asked for it and we're going to deliver. An *evening* recruitment event with no pre-registration required. How cool is that? Now, there's no more excuse. If you are interested in making the Los Angeles Fire Department your life's work, visit: http://www.lafd.org/recruit.htm

    =-=-=-=

    - Halloween Safety, October 31

It's one of our most visited web pages and is often described as the most complete Halloween safety checklist on the 'net. The Governor's Office proclaimed it as a Website of the Week.... and all *you* have to do is click on the link:

    =-=-=-=

    - City of Hope "Fight for Life", November 14

OK, we'll admit that a boxing event might at first not seem like your cup of tea. If you were fortunate enough to be in attendance at any of the nine (count them... nine!) previous "Fight for Life" events, you would be among the many who return year after year to witness the finest in sportsmanship in support of the City of Hope. You've seen the famous Olympic Auditorium in countless movies. Now is your turn to be there and sit alongside our families as Firefighters and Police Officers give cancer the One-Two Punch!

Let's be honest. Wouldn't attending the "Fight for Life" Police and Fire Boxing Event make for much better conversation at the water cooler on Monday morning than describing another night at the cinema? C'mon - you gotta' be there! Our Firefighters are counting on you!! For more info: http://www.cityofhope.org/fight4life

    =-=-=-=

    - Spark of Love Toy Drive for Needy Children, November 28

Rest assured that Kris Kringle is alive and well - but still practicing his Ho! Ho! Ho! (though we'll admit he looks rather silly doing so in his turnouts while standing in front of the Fire Station restroom mirror).

That's because the LAFD's Spark of Love Holiday Toy Drive for Needy Children won't begin until November 28th. If you'd like to learn more, please visit and bookmark our "Spark of Love" website at: http://www.lafd.org/toyprog.htm

    =-=-=-=

And finally, Fire Prevention Week (October 5-11) was a tremendous success in Los Angeles. Thanks to the many of you who joined us for the weeks events, including the Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service, held at our Museum and Memorial
    site in Hollywood:

We hope to have some streaming video of the event on our website in the coming weeks!!

    =-=-=

We're so very proud to serve this great City and look forward to seeing you at one or more of these noteworthy events.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
