LOS ANGELES, CA:
Dear Friend of the LAFD:
Our local day of remembrance for all who were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 will include a pair of events held at two separate times and locations.
We welcome you to join members of the Los Angeles Fire Department at both events, where our families, friends and civic leaders will gather to reflect on the courage, honor and sacrifice of those in New York, Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia.
A Morning Event in Hollywood...
Our day begins at the LAFD Museum in Hollywood, where members of the LAFD Historical Society will honor the 343 New York Firefighters killed in the attack on The World Trade Center. This program will commence at 7:00 AM local time with a formal raising of the American flag, the ringing of bells and a brief ceremony.
The Museum will remain open from 7:00 AM to 12:00 noon so that visitors may tour the facility, visit the Memorial room, and watch videos in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The LAFD Museum is located at 1355 North Cahuenga Boulevard (two blocks south of Sunset) in Hollywood.
... and in the Afternoon at Elysian Park:
The long-anticipated unveiling of the Los Angeles Memorial to September 11, will take place at the Fire Department's Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in Elysian Park, beginning at 2:00 PM.
It is indeed an honor beyond words for the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department to permanently host this remarkable and indelible reminder to those who perished.
The volunteer task of delivering, preparing and erecting the monument, a 23-ton steel column from the base of the World Trade Center, is the team effort of countless people devoted to seeing that the courage, commitment and sacrifice of those killed will never be forgotten.
The nearly 20-foot tall column was originally part of the lobby structure of the World Trade Center. The largest remnant of the attacks outside of New York City, it now rests safely on reinforced concrete piles that sink nearly 30 feet below ground at the LAFD's Training Center.
Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn and local Councilmember Ed Reyes will be joined by Los Angeles Fire Chief William Bamattre and other dignitaries at this landmark event.
The LAFD's Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center, site of the 2:00 PM ceremony, is located at 1700 Stadium Way, near Dodger Stadium in Elysian Park.
