LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 1630 Hours (4:30 PM PDT), fifteen Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one EMS Battalion Captain and four Battalion Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Roxanne Bercik responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 3923 West Jefferson Boulevard in Jefferson Park. The first Company to arrive reported heavy smoke showing to the rear-central portion of a block-long row of combination one- and two-story masonry buildings. In a well-synchronized display of teamwork, Firefighters tenaciously took to the roof to effect arduous yet precise vertical ventilation, while their colleagues deftly forced entry and extended handlines deep within the well-involved one-story structure. This swift and effective action prevented fire from spreading to the half-dozen or more adjoined occupancies, which included several apartments. Despite the well-advanced fire and structural compromise, Firefighters had the flames under control in less than 29 minutes without Firefighter injury. An 86 year-old male epileptic residing in an apartment just east of the fire experienced a sudden seizure after minor smoke inhalation. Described in fair condition, he was transported to Brotman Medical Center by LAFD Paramedics. Fire related loss to Galice, Inc. a plastering contractor, is estimated at $240,000 ($175,000 structure & $65,000 contents), while the cause of the fire is categorized as undetermined.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INVESTIGATION:
On Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at 1821 Hours (6:21 PM PDT), five Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, including an LAFD Hazardous Materials Task Force, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, and one EMS Battalion Captain under the direction of 15th Battalion Commander Robert Rose, responded to a Hazardous Materials Investigation in the 19800 block of Parthenia Street in Winnetka. Dispatched to a traffic collision, the first Company arrived quickly to discover an overturned pickup truck with its sizeable cargo of swimming pool chemicals spilled upon the pavement. With respect for the light but prevailing wind, Firefighters immediately established a viable perimeter, Command and staging, while summoning a Fire Department Hazardous Materials team. Parthenia Street was closed to all traffic, while those residents immediately adjacent were directed to shelter in place within their homes. With a cadre of Police officers standing by to assist with any formal evacuation, LAFD Hazmat experts mitigated the hazard with celerity, quickly minimizing any danger from the 20-plus gallons of Chlorine, 16 Gallons of Muriatic Acid and 50 gallons of Soda Ash that had spilled and mingled on the asphalt roadway. As Police, Health and Street Maintenance officials developed a collective plan to restore the roadway, LAFD Paramedics further examined the pickup driver. Following his medical assessment and consultation, the 43 year-old man was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for further evaluation. The incident was subsequently turned over to the Los Angeles County Health Department to handle to conclusion.
