LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE
On Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at 2229 hours fifteen companies of Firefighters, four Chief Officer Command Teams, five Rescue Ambulances, two EMS Battalion Captains and other support units under the command of Assistant Chief Michael S. Fulmis responded to a greater alarm structure fire at 6500 Yucca Street in the Hollywood area. First units on scene reported a five story, 100’ x 100’, 100 unit apartment building with fire in one unit on the fourth floor. Firefighters using handlines confined the fire to the unit of origin and extinguished the fire in twenty-four minutes. Simultaneous salvage operations were put in place during fire suppression activity lessening the collateral damage to the sprinklered building. An inoperable smoke alarm was discovered in the fire unit. A fifty-six year old female jumped from the fourth floor just as fire resources were arriving on scene impaling herself on a wrought iron fence. She was declared deceased at the scene. A fifty-one year old male was transported to Kaiser-Sunset with serious smoke inhalation. Both were occupants of the fire unit. One adult male was displaced and was assisted by the American Red Cross. No Firefighter injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation and the loss is still being tabulated.
