LOS ANGELES, CA:
GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 0211 Hours (2:11 AM PDT), ten Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one LAFD Hazardous Materials Squad, one EMS Battalion Captain and two Battalion Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief John D. Badgett responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 5074 West Pico Boulevard in the Mid-City. The first Company to arrive reported heavy fire showing to the rear of a one-story auto upholstery business. Firefighters using handlines mounted a brisk and decisive assault on the flames, preventing their spread to the nearby business. Their adroit actions confined the fire damage to ordinary combustibles that filled a trio of 25’ x 25’ metal storage buildings. The flames were extinguished in just 22 minutes. During fire attack, one Firefighter sustained a laceration to his left hand. An LAFD Ambulance later transported him to Midway Hospital in good condition. Fire loss is still being tabulated, while the cause of the blaze remains under active investigation.
MAJOR EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FIRE:
On Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 0352 Hours (3:52 AM PDT), twenty-one Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, three LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one Hazardous Materials Squad, one EMS Battalion Captain and four Battalion Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief John D. Badgett responded to a Major Emergency Structure Fire at 501 North Fairfax Avenue in the Fairfax District. Alerted by witnesses who heard an explosion, the first Companies arrived quickly to discover heavy smoke showing from “Grill Express”, a ground-floor restaurant on the northwest corner of Fairfax and Rosewood Avenues. Firefighters forced entry and searched all portions of the 3700 square-foot building to discover an intense fire extending vertically within the heavily remodeled walls of the 1946 era structure. Aided by their colleagues skilful vertical ventilation, and with use of sophisticated thermal imaging cameras, Firefighters continued a precise interior assault with handlines against the stubborn blaze, which eventually took hold of the attic. The fire was confined to the structure of origin and extinguished in just 95 minutes. There were no injuries. Loss from the fire is still being tabulated. The cause of this early morning blaze remains categorized as under active investigation.
