Trench Collapse
At around 1356 hrs, Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the 11200 blk of 14th for a 26 year old construction worker trapped in a trench collapse. Command called in Newport Fire for M/A to the scene with trench rescue equipment to assist in the rescue. Fellow workers got into the hole and attempted to start CPR, but had a difficult time doing CPR on count of large amount of dirt on the person's chest. The person was in a 8-10ft deep,4ft wide, and 30 ft long. The person was installing a lateral sewer line to a new home. Rescure's used special equipment such as a huge vacuum truck that pulled dirt and muck from the trench. Rescue workers, worked more than an hour to free the man. The man expired shortly before he was taken out of the hole. There was no steel trench box in the hole at the time the collapse. Depts on scene were; Pleasant Praririe, Bristol (Kenosha Co), Round Lake, Antioch, Libertyville, New Port, Fox Lake, Beach Park, Gurnee, Mundelein, Lincolnshire, Lake Zurich, Countryside, & Zion ( Lake Co. Ill) Racine Fire Bells for rehab. OSHA was also called in for the investigation.

3-ALARM FIRE DESTROYS FAMOUS LAS VEGAS CASINO
Fire destroyed one of Las Vegas' more famous casinos early Thursday morning. The Moulin Rouge was well known for a number of years as one of the first integrated casinos in Las Vegas. The fire gutted the casino, which has been under renovation for the past several years. More than 100 people were evacuated from nearby apartments, which were converted from hotel rooms. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Two civilians were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries during the incident.
Fire dispatchers received numerous calls at 1:18 a.m. that the Moulin Rouge, 900 W. Bonanza Rd was on fire. Battalion Chief Larry Wickliffe was first on scene and reported heavy fire showing from the west side of the casino area and immediately called for a second alarm. Flames were just beginning to show through the roof of the 2-story building, sometimes the flames reaching 50-60 feet into the air. Within an hour flames grew more intense so a third alarm was sent to the scene bringing a total of 25 units with over 75 firefighters from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County to the scene.
From the start of the incident, firefighters fought the fire from the outside using four ladder trucks and several fire hoses from the ground. At one time more than 5000 gallons of water were being dumped on the fire each minute. Firefighters' concern included bringing the fire under control and preventing the fire from spreading to nearby apartments. During the fire, more than 100 residents were evacuated. A number of them were transported by bus to the Las Vegas Senior Center on W. Bonanza at Las Vegas Blvd to a shelter set up by the American Red Cross. Two residents were transported to area hospitals during the fire, one complained of breathing difficulties and another of severe stomach pains. No firefighters were injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Security personnel told investigators that they checked the casino around midnight and everything appeared fine. At approximately 1:15 a.m. the personnel reported smoke coming from the roof and called 9-1-1. At that time they said no fire was visible inside the casino. Residents stated that security at the complex was excellent, with personnel making regular rounds.
The fire gutted the casino, which opened in 1955. It was vacant with some renovation work being done in the casino portion of the building. The building also had some offices on the second floor. A church and appliance shop was located on the east side of the building.
Firefighters will remain on the scene for several hours pouring water on the remains, which contain several hot spot. Fire investigators are not expected to enter the building until later in the day after it cools off.

FEDERAL AGENTS TO ASSIST IN CASINO FIRE INVESTIGATION
Special agents from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) will be assisting Las Vegas Fire & Rescue fire investigators into the probe of what caused the fire, which destroyed the Moulin Rouge casino early Thursday morning. Agents from the ATF should start arriving today and begin work tomorrow.
The agents are members of a special fire investigation team of the ATF known as the National Response Team (NRT). The NRT usually investigates fires, which fit into certain categories. The Moulin Rouge fit two of those profiles; the fire is expected to total more than a million dollars in loss and the building was a historical part of the community. At the request of Fire Chief David L. Washington, Keith Heinzerling, Agent in charge of the Las Vegas office of the ATF agreed to assist with the investigation with the help of the NRT.
Currently the building is too unstable for investigators to enter and start the investigation. The walls of the building will first have to be stabilized before any investigators can enter. Investigators are expected to start the interior investigation after the building is made safe.
The NRT is made up of veteran special agents having postblast and fire origin-and-cause expertise; forensic chemists; explosives enforcement officers; explosives detection canines; intelligence support and audit support. Teams works alongside State and local investigators in reconstructing the scene of the fire, identifying the seat or origin of the fire, conducting interviews, and sifting through debris to obtain evidence related to the fire scene investigation. Further complementing the team's efforts are technical, legal, and intelligence advisors. The team also has a number of vehicles at their disposal including fully equipped response
vehicles, mobile command posts and mobile forensic laboratories.
Since its inception in 1978, the NRT has made over 400 responses around the country. The NRT has been to Las Vegas two times in the past; 1997 for the Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church fire and in 1983 for the fatal fire at the Hilton Hotel.
The 3-Alarm fire at the Moulin Rouge started at 1:18 a.m. Thursday morning. Over 25 units and 75 firefighters responded to the blaze, which totally destroyed the 89,000 square foot facility, which opened in 1955. It has been closed for the past several years.
The fire forced the evacuation of nearly 100 residents of the Moulin Rouge apartments, 110 units that were converted from hotel rooms. Nearly 75 of those displaced were taken by bus to the Dula Senior Citizens building on West Bonanza Road late Thursday morning. As of Friday morning the American Red Cross reported that 48 people were still at the shelter, down from 60 people late Thursday afternoon. They are not expected to be able to return to their apartments for at least another day. Late yesterday, residents were permitted to return to their apartments, two at a time, for five minutes to retrieve personal belongings, and medications until the area is made safe.
The Moulin Rouge first opened in 1955 as Las Vegas' first integrated casino. It only stayed opened for six months. Through the years there were several plans to renovate casino and reopen it. The hotel part of the complex was converted to apartments, which are currently occupied. There were no operational automatic fire sprinklers in the building. At the time of the fire, the casino building was being renovated and contained a considerable amount of building material and furniture. There was no gambling machines or tables in the building. The fire completely destroyed the building. Only the outside walls and the well-known Moulin Rouge sign on the front of the building remain. The Moulin Rouge was added as a landmark on the City
of Las Vegas Historic Property Register in June of 1992. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in December of 1992.

Implant restores deaf firefighter's hearing

Depew firefighter Mike Zorgaria can hear things he never heard before, thanks to a cochleaer implant.
On Nov. 1, Mike Zogaria's life went quiet. The 43-year-old volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician from Depew had hearing problems since he was 4, and wore a hearing aid. But in the space of a couple of hours, he lost all hearing in both ears.
"I was working," he said. "I noticed something didn't seem right. By noon (my hearing) was gone."
"I was the last person to talk to him on the phone," said Kim Ignatowski, his friend and co-worker at Rural/Metro Medical Services. She said he was scared.
Zogaria, who has been on hundreds of emergency calls as a first responder, couldn't even hear a siren. He was left in sudden and complete silence.
But today he can talk about his experience on the telephone and listen to Reba McEntire - one of his favorite singers - on the radio.
He can even hear things he has never heard before, all because of a cochlear implant that was surgically implanted in his skull behind his right ear Dec. 20.
"Knock on wood, it's been going very well," he said.
The device was activated Jan. 21, and adjusted on a regular basis until he got used to the sounds. He returned to work part time a couple of weeks ago.
Because he was out of work for six months and has continuing bills to pay for maintenance of the implant, members of the fire company have organized a benefit for Zogaria from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday in the Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Road, Depew.
His friends and co-workers at Rural/Metro are selling tickets and helping out for the benefit as well.
"I feel like I've got a second chance in life," Zogaria said, "especially when you hear stuff you've never heard before."

Trench Collapse
At around 1356 hrs, Pleasant Prairie Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the 11200 blk of 14th for a 26 year old construction worker trapped in a trench collapse. Command called in Newport Fire for M/A to the scene with trench rescue equipment to assist in the rescue. Fellow workers got into the hole and attempted to start CPR, but had a difficult time doing CPR on count of large amount of dirt on the person's chest. The person was in a 8-10ft deep,4ft wide, and 30 ft long. The person was installing a lateral sewer line to a new home. Rescure's used special equipment such as a huge vacuum truck that pulled dirt and muck from the trench. Rescue workers, worked more than an hour to free the man. The man expired shortly before he was taken out of the hole. There was no steel trench box in the hole at the time the collapse. Depts on scene were; Pleasant Praririe, Bristol (Kenosha Co), Round Lake, Antioch, Libertyville, New Port, Fox Lake, Beach Park, Gurnee, Mundelein, Lincolnshire, Lake Zurich, Countryside, & Zion ( Lake Co. Ill) Racine Fire Bells for rehab. OSHA was also called in for the investigation.

3-ALARM FIRE DESTROYS FAMOUS LAS VEGAS CASINO
Fire destroyed one of Las Vegas' more famous casinos early Thursday morning. The Moulin Rouge was well known for a number of years as one of the first integrated casinos in Las Vegas. The fire gutted the casino, which has been under renovation for the past several years. More than 100 people were evacuated from nearby apartments, which were converted from hotel rooms. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Two civilians were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries during the incident.
Fire dispatchers received numerous calls at 1:18 a.m. that the Moulin Rouge, 900 W. Bonanza Rd was on fire. Battalion Chief Larry Wickliffe was first on scene and reported heavy fire showing from the west side of the casino area and immediately called for a second alarm. Flames were just beginning to show through the roof of the 2-story building, sometimes the flames reaching 50-60 feet into the air. Within an hour flames grew more intense so a third alarm was sent to the scene bringing a total of 25 units with over 75 firefighters from Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Clark County to the scene.
From the start of the incident, firefighters fought the fire from the outside using four ladder trucks and several fire hoses from the ground. At one time more than 5000 gallons of water were being dumped on the fire each minute. Firefighters' concern included bringing the fire under control and preventing the fire from spreading to nearby apartments. During the fire, more than 100 residents were evacuated. A number of them were transported by bus to the Las Vegas Senior Center on W. Bonanza at Las Vegas Blvd to a shelter set up by the American Red Cross. Two residents were transported to area hospitals during the fire, one complained of breathing difficulties and another of severe stomach pains. No firefighters were injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Security personnel told investigators that they checked the casino around midnight and everything appeared fine. At approximately 1:15 a.m. the personnel reported smoke coming from the roof and called 9-1-1. At that time they said no fire was visible inside the casino. Residents stated that security at the complex was excellent, with personnel making regular rounds.
The fire gutted the casino, which opened in 1955. It was vacant with some renovation work being done in the casino portion of the building. The building also had some offices on the second floor. A church and appliance shop was located on the east side of the building.
Firefighters will remain on the scene for several hours pouring water on the remains, which contain several hot spot. Fire investigators are not expected to enter the building until later in the day after it cools off.

FEDERAL AGENTS TO ASSIST IN CASINO FIRE INVESTIGATION
Special agents from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) will be assisting Las Vegas Fire & Rescue fire investigators into the probe of what caused the fire, which destroyed the Moulin Rouge casino early Thursday morning. Agents from the ATF should start arriving today and begin work tomorrow.
The agents are members of a special fire investigation team of the ATF known as the National Response Team (NRT). The NRT usually investigates fires, which fit into certain categories. The Moulin Rouge fit two of those profiles; the fire is expected to total more than a million dollars in loss and the building was a historical part of the community. At the request of Fire Chief David L. Washington, Keith Heinzerling, Agent in charge of the Las Vegas office of the ATF agreed to assist with the investigation with the help of the NRT.
Currently the building is too unstable for investigators to enter and start the investigation. The walls of the building will first have to be stabilized before any investigators can enter. Investigators are expected to start the interior investigation after the building is made safe.
The NRT is made up of veteran special agents having postblast and fire origin-and-cause expertise; forensic chemists; explosives enforcement officers; explosives detection canines; intelligence support and audit support. Teams works alongside State and local investigators in reconstructing the scene of the fire, identifying the seat or origin of the fire, conducting interviews, and sifting through debris to obtain evidence related to the fire scene investigation. Further complementing the team's efforts are technical, legal, and intelligence advisors. The team also has a number of vehicles at their disposal including fully equipped response
vehicles, mobile command posts and mobile forensic laboratories.
Since its inception in 1978, the NRT has made over 400 responses around the country. The NRT has been to Las Vegas two times in the past; 1997 for the Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church fire and in 1983 for the fatal fire at the Hilton Hotel.
The 3-Alarm fire at the Moulin Rouge started at 1:18 a.m. Thursday morning. Over 25 units and 75 firefighters responded to the blaze, which totally destroyed the 89,000 square foot facility, which opened in 1955. It has been closed for the past several years.
The fire forced the evacuation of nearly 100 residents of the Moulin Rouge apartments, 110 units that were converted from hotel rooms. Nearly 75 of those displaced were taken by bus to the Dula Senior Citizens building on West Bonanza Road late Thursday morning. As of Friday morning the American Red Cross reported that 48 people were still at the shelter, down from 60 people late Thursday afternoon. They are not expected to be able to return to their apartments for at least another day. Late yesterday, residents were permitted to return to their apartments, two at a time, for five minutes to retrieve personal belongings, and medications until the area is made safe.
The Moulin Rouge first opened in 1955 as Las Vegas' first integrated casino. It only stayed opened for six months. Through the years there were several plans to renovate casino and reopen it. The hotel part of the complex was converted to apartments, which are currently occupied. There were no operational automatic fire sprinklers in the building. At the time of the fire, the casino building was being renovated and contained a considerable amount of building material and furniture. There was no gambling machines or tables in the building. The fire completely destroyed the building. Only the outside walls and the well-known Moulin Rouge sign on the front of the building remain. The Moulin Rouge was added as a landmark on the City
of Las Vegas Historic Property Register in June of 1992. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in December of 1992.

Implant restores deaf firefighter's hearing

Depew firefighter Mike Zorgaria can hear things he never heard before, thanks to a cochleaer implant.
On Nov. 1, Mike Zogaria's life went quiet. The 43-year-old volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician from Depew had hearing problems since he was 4, and wore a hearing aid. But in the space of a couple of hours, he lost all hearing in both ears.
"I was working," he said. "I noticed something didn't seem right. By noon (my hearing) was gone."
"I was the last person to talk to him on the phone," said Kim Ignatowski, his friend and co-worker at Rural/Metro Medical Services. She said he was scared.
Zogaria, who has been on hundreds of emergency calls as a first responder, couldn't even hear a siren. He was left in sudden and complete silence.
But today he can talk about his experience on the telephone and listen to Reba McEntire - one of his favorite singers - on the radio.
He can even hear things he has never heard before, all because of a cochlear implant that was surgically implanted in his skull behind his right ear Dec. 20.
"Knock on wood, it's been going very well," he said.
The device was activated Jan. 21, and adjusted on a regular basis until he got used to the sounds. He returned to work part time a couple of weeks ago.
Because he was out of work for six months and has continuing bills to pay for maintenance of the implant, members of the fire company have organized a benefit for Zogaria from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday in the Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Road, Depew.
His friends and co-workers at Rural/Metro are selling tickets and helping out for the benefit as well.
"I feel like I've got a second chance in life," Zogaria said, "especially when you hear stuff you've never heard before."
