    LOS ANGELES, CA:

CIVILIAN FATALITY AIRCRAFT CRASH WITH FIRE:

    On Saturday, May 24, 2003
at 1225 Hours (12:25 PM PDT), eleven Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, including Heavy Rescue and Urban Search and Rescue Units, two LAFD Helicopters, one EMS District Captain and five LAFD Rescue Ambulances, as well as two Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Dean Cathey responded to a reported Aircraft Down and on fire in the Santa Monica Mountains near 3641 North Glenridge Drive in Studio City. Citizen reports and a plume of smoke led Firefighters to burning vegetation in a steep ravine where the small privately owned fixed-wing single-propeller-driven aircraft impacted the heavily wooded hillside. The vintage two-passenger ex-military plane, a 1956 North American T-28C “Trojan” with fore-aft seating, ID N537Z, was destroyed in the crash. Firefighters rappelled down the precipitous incline to find the massively damaged aircraft and human remains. There were no survivors, yet no one on the ground was injured. A fire in the underbrush was quickly contained as Firefighters began the delicate yet dolorous task of identifying the body parts of at least one person, preserving the scene and later assisting Coroner’s officials in the recovery and removal of remains decimated by the impact. This thorough and respectful effort continued as Los Angeles Police Officers secured the perimeter, and National Transportation Safety Board officials commenced their on-site formal investigation.

    GREATER ALARM STRUCTURE FIRE:

    On Saturday, May 24, 2003
at 2246 Hours (10:46 PM PDT), ten Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, two LAFD Rescue Ambulances, one LAFD Helicopter and four Chief Officer Command Teams, all under the direction of Assistant Chief Michael Fulmis responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 328 West Furness Avenue in Highland Park. The first Company to arrive skillfully navigated rear yards and steep terrain of an adjacent street to extend primary handlines that prevented fire from spreading beyond a two-story hillside home fully involved with fire. Additional hand and supply lines were deployed along narrow streets and an even narrower driveway serving the half-dozen adjacent residences. Firefighters were able to confine the fire to the 1200 square-foot home, extinguishing the flames in just 28 minutes. No injuries were reported. Three adults displaced by the fire are seeking their own accommodations. Fire loss is estimated at $160,000 ($150,000 structure & $10,000 contents). The cause of the fire is considered deliberate and is being investigated as arson by both Los Angeles Police and Fire Department officials.
