Accident in Orem kills man PDF | Print | E-mail

    NATALIE EVANS - Daily Herald
A construction accident became fatal in Orem on Friday.

The 51-year-old male from Colorado was installing a natural gas line at 2000 North 1800 West for the new power plant in Vineyard.

An excavator, with cables running from it in two directions to form a triangle was moving the pipe. One of the cables broke at about 1 p.m.

"This caused the pipe to swing free into one of the workers, he was unfortunately in the way of the swinging pipe," Orem Police Sgt. Matt Pedersen said. "The pipe struck him and rolled onto him."

The pipes are 60 feet long and weigh 3,900 pounds.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. Police are waiting to release his name until family in Colorado are contacted. Pedersen said they were having trouble reaching the victim's wife.

Workers at the scene -- Pedersen believes there were at least five -- were able to move the pipe off the victim, but it was too late.

Pedersen said there was nothing suspicious about the accident.

"It just looks like a worksite accident with unfortunate consequences," he said.

The body was sent to the Salt Lake Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. Pedersen said that is routine procedure in workplace accidents.

Representatives from Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Orem Police and Orem paramedics responded.
