ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A 45-year-old man died early Sunday morning
in a fire in his home, a fate his father suffered at the same
address more than seven years ago.
Garry Gardner of Salina, outside Syracuse, was pronounced dead
at University Hospital in Syracuse after suffering smoke inhalation
and burns over 90 percent of his body.
Three other residents of the two-story house, including
Gardner's mother and 23-year-old daughter, escaped without injury,
    police said.
In January 1996 Gardner and neighbor Mike Secreti tried but
failed to save Gardner's father, George Gardner, 72, from a fire at
the same address, Secreti told the Post-Standard of Syracuse.
The elder Gardner died from smoke inhalation in a fire that
started when a faulty hot water heater set ablaze cardboard boxes
stored next to it, investigators determined. The house was
    destroyed and later rebuilt.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of Sunday's
blaze. The fire started on the first floor, according to Joe
Rinefierd, the director of fire services for Onondaga County's
    emergency management system.
