FORT PIERCE, Fla.
hree people were killed when their sport utility vehicle slammed into a tanker truck along Florida's Turnpike during a steady downpour northwest of Fort Pierce. Another man was killed later in a motorcycle accident near the turnpike in Palm Beach County.
The accidents were among several reported in quick succession during a powerful thunderstorm that dumped up to six inches of rain and snarled traffic Sunday along the Treasure Coast.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Miami residents Lukeycia Ann Moody, 28, the driver of the vehicle, Sudrena Pollard, 18, and 3-year-old Audrianna Moody were killed when their southbound Chevy Tahoe crossed the median and struck the truck. The driver of the tanker truck, Ryan S. Perciavalle, 26, of Altamonte Springs, suffered minor injuries.
Officials said Pollard was the victim not wearing a seatbelt. The crash caused the spill of 140 gallons of diesel fuel onto the northbound turnpike lane, forcing traffic detours.
James Gregory Robinson, 55, of Royal Palm Beach, meanwhile, was killed along Jog Road about one-tenth of a mile north of the turnpike when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a guardrail. Robinson was thrown from his motorcycle and later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
FHP officials said all of the accidents were considered weather-related.
