  • Deerfield Beach Fla--Worker has arm amputated

    DEERFIELD BEACH
Worker loses arm to big cement mixer

A cement company worker's arm was ripped off when it got caught in a cement mixing machine in Deerfield Beach, a fire official said Saturday.

The 56-year-old worker, whose name was not released, was feeding material into a large cement mixer when his shovel and arm got caught in the machine's electronic mixer, Broward County Fire Rescue Lt. David Erdman said.

The mixer twisted off the man's left arm just above the elbow. His arm fell into the cement and flowed down the cement conveyor for a few moments before his co-workers turned the machine off, Erdman said.

Paramedics took the man and his severed arm to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where a team of specialists tried to re-attach it.

Because the arm was badly twisted and mangled, it was unlikely specialists would be able to reattach it, Erdman said.

It was not known late Saturday if the re-attachment was successful.
