Electrical fire guts travel trailer in Astor

    Staff Report

    Last update: 12 August 2003

ASTOR -- Four units of the Volusia County Fire Services responded to a trailer fire Monday afternoon at the St. Johns River Campgrounds, but it was too late to save one travel trailer.

Fire officials say the 30-foot trailer, used as a home, belonged to Arnold Finch. Firefighters estimate it caused $8,000 worth of damage.

State fire marshal's investigators said the cause was electrical.

Volusia County Fire Captain Rhett Bradley said the fire threatened nearby trailers, but firefighters contained the blaze to Finch's trailer. "It just gutted it, but we saved the shell," Bradley said.

A trailer parked next to Finch's suffered about $300 in heat damage, however. The half-dozen firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to nearby woods and starting a brush fire, Bradley said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

It took county firefighters 13 minutes to respond to the fire, Bradley said. Although Volusia County has a first-response agreement with nearby Lake County, firefighters there were tied up with another call, he said.

Finch was staying in a recreational vehicle that he owns, Bradley said.
