Man Tosses Bucket Of Flame At His Rival, Officials Say

RIVERVIEW - Sheriff's officials say a Clearwater man tried to kill his girlfriend's former beau by dousing him with flaming liquid early Sunday after they left a nightclub.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Joshua Lee Singletary, 25, of 19135 U.S. 19 N., Apt. 30, lit a bucket of flammable liquid at Williams Park about 6 a.m. Sunday and tossed it out the window of his Ford F-150 onto Charles Roy Rock, 35, of 10005 Simms Road.

Fire Rescue Capt. Tom McCahan said a state laboratory has a sample of the liquid and is trying to identify it.

Some of the burning liquid splashed onto Singletary, sheriff's investigators said. Both men were taken to Tampa General Hospital and were in critical condition Monday night. Rock suffered burns on about 80 percent of his body, and Singletary had burns on about 18 percent of his body.

When Singletary is released, deputies plan to charge him with attempted murder and two counts of felony arson, the sheriff's office said.

By the time a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crew arrived at the park, Singletary had jumped into the Alafia River trying to escape, investigators said. He was captured by a sheriff's deputy in a boat.

McCahan said the two men apparently have been embroiled in an dispute about to a woman both have dated. Both men and their dates, including the woman they were fighting over, were at a nightclub when Rock left to go meet his brother at Williams Park, investigators said.

Shortly after Rock arrived at the park, Singletary and his date pulled up, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. Singletary then lit the bucket and threw it at Rock as he approached the truck, Carter said.

Details about the relationship between the two men and their dispute were confusing at best, officials say.

``There were a lot of conflicting stories,'' McCahan said.
