    INCIDENT DESCRIPTION

    GREATER ALARM GRASS FIRE:

    On Friday, August 8, 2003, at 1945 hours (7:45 p.m.), Twenty companies
of Canyon Springs Firefighters, one Battalion Command Teams, two CSFD
Rescue Ambulances, Two Helicopters, one Brush Patrol Units, Mutual aid
from the USFS and CFD, and other support personnel, under the direction
of Fire Chief Tim Macias, responded to a Greater Alarm Brush Fire at
2200 N. Soto Street in the Verdugo Canyon area. First units on the scene
reported approximately five to Ten acres of grass burning on a hillside,
fanned by winds pushing the fire in a northerly direction toward
several structures. Firefighters immediately took up a defensive
position around the homes for structure protection. Firefighters using
handlines and aided by aggressive helicopter water drops confined the
fire to approximately 210 acres of grass and light brush and
extinguished the fire in three hours and thirty minutes. One structure
was destroyed displacing four occupants and injuring one firefighter who
suffered a broken leg. The cause of the fire is listed as under investigation.
