Apartment blaze under investigation
The state fire marshal’s office is trying to figure out the cause of a fire that gutted a Fort Walton Beach apartment early Tuesday morning.
Investigator Steve Callahan said "nothing suspicious" has been uncovered thus far about the fire, which broke out about 3:40 a.m. at Walton Manor Apartments on Alder Ave.
The complex’s middle unit was destroyed when a fire swept through it, with smoke spreading to neighboring apartments, said Fort Walton Beach Battalion Chief Charlie Barber.
A woman who lives at the home was able to escape unharmed after a neighbor knocked on her window, Barber said.
Crews from four area fire departments fought the flames, while Destin and Eglin Air Force Base firefighters manned affected fire stations during the blaze.
One firefighter on the scene twisted an ankle, while another suffered a burn on the back of his hand, Barber said.
