3 Utahns critical after I-80 rollover
Three Utahns, including a 7-year-old girl, were in critical condition Wednesday after a rollover accident near Saltair.
The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. near 11400 West on I-80. An SUV carrying a mother, father and two children was passing a roofing truck when it clipped the larger vehicle. The impact tore off the side of the SUV and may have damaged one of the seat belts in the back, said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Doug. McCleve.
The impact caused the SUV to roll several times off the road and into a ditch.
The 7-year-old girl was ejected. When emergency crews arrived they found the father, in his early 30s, outside the vehicle, but they weren't sure Wednesday evening if he was ejected or got out on his own, McCleve said. Both the man and his daughter were airlifted to local hospitals in critical condition.
The girl's mother, in her late 20s, was trapped in the vehicle after it rolled and had to be extricated. She too was flown to a hospital in critical condition.

An infant that was properly secured in a child seat escaped with relatively minor injuries, McCleve said.
The SUV briefly caught fire after it rolled but crews were able to extinguish the flames before they reached the trapped woman.
Investigators were looking Wednesday into whether excessive speed or the driver possibly being asleep at the wheel may have been a factor in the accident, McCleve said.
The family, whose names have not been released, were returning from a trip in California, the UHP said.
