Utah-New Wildfire Consumes 5000 acres plus update
Blaze in Henry Mountains consumes over 5,000 acres
Winds hamper fire crews; Camp Williams fire is out
Just as one Utah fire was being extinguished, another ignited in the Henry Mountains Tuesday afternoon, burning more than 5,000 acres in less than 24 hours.
Triggered by as-yet-unknown causes, the Bulldog Fire was burning not far from Ticaboo, Garfield County. It was believed to have started about 2 p.m. Tuesday, Bureau of Land Management fire information officer Lisa Reid said. Fire crews didn't begin battling the blaze until about 10 p.m., she said.
No inhabited structures were being threatened by the fire Wednesday, although it was burning near two historically valuable mine shafts built in the late 1940s or early 1950s, Reid said. Also at risk from the fire was a communications tower, which Reid said firefighters were unable to protect.
"The winds are such that we can't get up there," said Reid. "If (the tower) does burn, it will cut off telephone service to Caineville."
Only 16 firefighters were working the fire Wednesday, but additional crews were expected on the scene by early today.
Closer to the Wasatch Front, officials at Camp Williams said the fire that burned 2,200 acres on the National Guard training facility was out by dusk Wednesday. Firefighters dug four fire lanes that effectively trapped the blaze in a ravine and then set backburns, forcing the fire to essentially burn itself out, said Lt. Col. Brad Blackner, public affairs officer for the Guard.
Smaller fires — the Mount Marvine Fire east of Richfield and the Woodenshoe Fire west of Blanding — also continued to burn Wednesday. The Mount Marvine Fire, which was started by lightning a week ago, had reportedly burned 175 acres and was about 25 percent contained, Reid said. The Woodenshoe Fire had burned about 2,700 acres and was more than 50 percent contained.
