Fire Burning at Camp Williams
Jul. 8, 2003
(Salt Lake City-AP) -- A spark from a contractor doing some welding started a 500-plus acre fire at Camp Williams today.
Salt Lake County fire Captain Jay Ziolkowski (zoll-COW-ski) says the fire started about 11 a-m and had burned more than 500 acres and was 70 percent contained by 4 p-m.
Ziolkowski says the communities of Eagle Mountain and Saratoga faced a low threat, but there were no evacuations.
The fire was contained to the National Guard camp.
More than 100 fire personnel and an air tanker and two helicopters were fighting the blaze.
Ziolkowski says the fire moved quickly under high winds and low humidity even though the welder had two people monitoring for fire safety.
