This afternoon, crews were alerted to the area of Saunders Station Road in the vicinity of the railroad tracks for an elderly male patient who had fallen over a hillside. Upon crews calling en-route, communications updated units reporting the patient was unconscious, but now breathing. Monroeville Police units arrived first to find a male patient who had fallen approximately 20 to 25 feet over a cliff to land beside the railroad tracks below. FD crews arrived and began assembling stokes baskets and rope rescue equipment to extricate the patient who was approximately 300 yards from the closest roadway surface. Crews stabilized and packaged the patient before moving the the squad for transport to the waiting medic unit. Crews were on scene for less than one half hour, and the patient was transported to a Pittsburgh trauma center for further treatment.
