2-alarm fire burns at S.L. salvage yard
A two-alarm fire at a Salt Lake salvage yard early Saturday morning lit up the night sky with flames shooting some 80 feet into the air.
Four workers at the salvage company, near 700 South and 4400 West, were working on a pile of cars when the fire started, said Dennis McKone, administrative assistant to the Salt Lake fire chief.
The workers called for help at 12:03 a.m. Saturday after apparently trying to initially put out the flames themselves, McKone said.
"The first crews to arrive reported large volumes of fire in a big stack of salvage cars," McKone said. The stack of cars was between one and two stories high, McKone estimated. Before getting water on the blaze, flames reached 80 feet into the air, McKone said.
It took the 45 firefighters on scene about 2 1/2 hours to control the blaze, McKone said. By 5 a.m., all but two crews were released from the fire.
A damage estimate remained unclear late Saturday, McKone said.
