Students evacuated after propane gas leaks
A propane gas leak forced officials at Deerfield Beach Middle School to evacuate hundreds of students Monday afternoon, firefighters said.
Deerfield Beach firefighters received the call about the gas leak at 2:44 p.m. Once they identified where the leak was coming from, they called in Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue's Hazardous Materials team.
The hazmat crew stopped the leak about an hour after it was reported. The leak started when a construction worker with a back hoe accidentally struck a partially exposed pipe connected to an underground, 1,000-gallon propane tank, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Division Chief Stephen McInerny said. Workers are building a swimming pool at the school.
No injuries were reported.
