Crews make gains in containing 3 fires
Crews fighting three wildfires in southern Utah are making progress at containing the blazes.
The Lonesome Beaver fire, at 2,558 acres, was 80 percent contained Tuesday, according to the Richfield Interagency Fire Center. The fire is burning on the Henry mountains above Hanksville, Wayne County, and could be contained by Friday.
About 150 fire personnel are on the scene, and the estimated costs of battling the blaze are $264,000, the center said.
The 56-acre Swiss fire on the Arizona Strip could be contained by the end of the week. Twenty firefighters were mopping up hot spots Tuesday, said fire information officer David Boyd.
The Mile Marker 30 fire, at 49 acres, briefly threatened a home near Pintura, Washington County. It is also being mopped up with 24 firefighters on the ground and a helicopter dropping water above, Boyd said. It is burning 20 miles north of St. George.
