RIDGE MANOR WEST - A 46-year-old Tampa man was killed after he ran across Interstate 75 in northern Hernando County early Thursday, snarling traffic for almost two hours.

As of midafternoon Thursday, authorities had not determined what prompted Robert L. Wilson of Oxford Chapel Drive to leave his Chevrolet pickup and dart across I-75, where he was struck in the northbound lanes. Wilson was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The chain of events began about 6 a.m., about 3 miles south of the Hernando-Sumter county line when Wilson's southbound pickup swerved in front of a semitrailer truck and rammed the guardrail, said Trooper Charles Lee.

The driver of the semi, who was not identified by authorities, lost control of his rig, causing it to flip over in the median.

There were no hazardous materials onboard, and the driver was not injured, Lee said.

Moments later, Wilson jumped from his pickup and tried to run across the damp interstate, where he was run over by a Mack truck traveling north.

The driver, David L. Ware, 50, of Brooksville, was not injured. Authorities said they had no plans to cite or file charges against him.

Traffic was slowed for about two hours in both directions while troopers investigated the accident and righted the semi.
