  • Trench Collapse kills worker in Wisconsin

PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. (AP) - A worker died when a trench
collapsed outside a home under construction in a subdivision here
    Thursday.
Dewayne H. Spiller, 26, of Beach Park, Ill., was buried up to
his armpits and died after about 30 minutes, Pleasant Prairie fire
and rescue officials said. It took another 50 minutes to remove the
    body.
Paul Guilbert, fire and rescue chief, said such accidents are
deadly because of the pressure from the collapsing soil.
"As the earth comes down it's preventing you from breathing,"
he said. "It's preventing the lungs from expanding. You're
attempting to gasp for air as you breathe in it's a normal body
function for the lungs to constrict.
The accident happened as Spiller and two other workers were
extending sewer and water lines onto the property of the house
under construction in the Tobin Creek subdivision, Guilbert's
    office reported.
Spiller was in the trench when the sides collapsed, preventing
him from escaping, and the amount of dirt that collapsed prevented
the other workers from digging him out, officials said.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was expected
    to investigate the accident.
