CLINTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - An accident involving six cars and
a tractor-trailer killed two people Sunday morning and injured at
least two on Interstate 78, authorities said.
State police closed the road in both directions while they
cleared the accident, Trooper M. Cruz said. The rainy, foggy
weather prevented authorities from sending a helicopter to the
area.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known, and
authorities were not releasing the names of the victims.
The crash was the second fatal accident on I-78 over the
Memorial Day holiday weekend. On Friday afternoon, two Teaneck men
were killed in a fiery crash in Warren County.
E. Edwin Shade, 78, and Clair Hardenstine, 76, were killed when
their car crossed over a grassy median and crashed into a
tractor-trailer. Both men were ejected and the vehicle burst into
flames.
The men were known as loyal members of the Teaneck New Theatre
Group in Bergen County, which presents about three productions each
season.
The driver of the truck was treated for minor injuries and
released from a hospital the same day.
