MOUNT EDEN, Ky. — A fire at a volunteer firehouse in central Kentucky has destroyed the building.

WLKY-TV reports the blaze at the Mount Eden Volunteer Fire Department early Tuesday also caused the loss of millions of dollars in equipment. The department is located near the Spencer-Shelby county line.

Lt. John Butler with the department said he never thought he would near a dispatch to his own firehouse and never wants to hear it again. He said he arrived around 5:15 a.m. EDT to find the structure engulfed in flames.

More than 50 firefighters from about a half-dozen fire departments came to assist.

Butler said the department's gear and equipment are a complete loss.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
