Council sends $165 million levy to ballot

(Seattle-AP) -- The Seattle City Council today passed
legislation asking voters to approve 167-point-2 (m) million
dollars worth of improvements to fire stations and other emergency
    facilities.
The measure to raise property taxes will be on the November 4th
    ballot.
The package is 60 (m) million dollars less than requested by
Mayor Greg Nickels, but contains at least some renovation work for
32 of the city's 33 fire stations. The package also calls for
purchase of a new fireboat and renovation of another.
A new Emergency Operations center also would be built.
The ballot measure would cost the owner of a 300-thousand-dollar
house an average of 73 dollars a year over nine years, with more
paid in the first year and less in later years.
