Ira fire department getting big federal grant

(Ira, Vermont-AP) -- The Ira Volunteer Fire Department is
getting new equipment thanks to a federal grant.
The Department of Homeland Security is giving the Ira department
more than 17-thousand dollars that it will use to buy new turnout
gear for all 13 fire fighters.
That's more than the Ira department's annual budget of under
15-thousand dollars.
The grant is part of a 750 (m)million dollar plan by the federal
government to prepare local departments to deal with future
terrorist attacks.
Ira Fire Chief Robert Toppin says some of the gear his fire
fighters use dates to the 1980s.
Earlier this month, the Ira department got three-thousand
dollars for new radios.
