  • Saratoga Springs Fire Almost 400 acres

Fire near S. Springs burns 400 acres, caused by shooters

Fire investigators believe target shooters started a blaze south of Saratoga Springs Saturday that burned close to 400 acres.

The fire was called in just after 4 p.m., according to Utah County dispatch. Saratoga Springs fire chief Jess Campbell said the fire, which has been named the Dutchman Fire, was about 80 percent contained by about 9 p.m. Saturday, when crews stopped working for the night because of the hazardous terrain. The fire was not close to any structures, although Rocky Mountain Power crews were on hand because the flames got close to a power line that ran through the area.

Although the cause has not been confirmed, investigators found evidence of fresh rock strikes indicative of target shooting. Campbell said a number of cars were leaving the area after the fire was reported, and sheriff's deputies interviewed the people believed to be responsible.

Crews attacked the fire quickly, Campbell said, because the flames appeared to be headed toward a woman search and rescue crews were trying to get out. She and her husband had been hunting earlier and she fell and was injured. However, crews got the woman out safely.
