Fairpark fourplex fire displaces 2 families

SALT LAKE CITY -- Two families were displaced following a one-alarm fire Sunday at a Fairpark community fourplex.

About 6 p.m., Salt Lake City fire crews arrived at 361 N. Oakley to find flames coming from the roof of the four-unit apartment building. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly, but not before it caused "a fair amount of damage," said Carl Steadman, Salt Lake City Fire division chief.

Fire caused the most damage in the upper-right unit of the apartment. Steadman said it's believed no one was living in the unit, though tenants were preparing to move in.

Two families totaling 10 people have been displaced by the fire. They are receiving assistance from local Red Cross chapters, Steadman said.

Investigators have yet to determine what caused the fire or where it started. Early reports indicate it may have started between the ceiling of the lower level and the floor of the upper level, Steadman said.

An estimated cost of damage to the fourplex was unavailable Sunday night.
