West Valley family escapes house fire

WEST VALLEY CITY — A family escaped an early-morning house fire without injuries, though its home was destroyed.

About 2 a.m. Sunday, crews responded to a house fire near 2900 West and 3300 South. They arrived to find flames coming out of the home's front door and windows, as well as the back of the house, said West Valley Fire Marshal Bob Fitzgerald.

The family's mother awoke early Sunday, heard a "crackling noise" and got out of bed to investigate, Fitzgerald said.

After finding smoke coming from the ceiling of one of the rooms, she quickly woke up her children to get them out. One young boy had to escape the burning house through a window, Fitzgerald said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage to the home is estimated at $100,000.
