Morning fire damages Riverton homePublished: Monday, July 26, 2010 11:27 RIVERTON — Five children were able to evacuate to safety Monday following a fire in their garage.

Firefighters were called to a house at 1985 W. 13730 South just after 10 a.m. The first arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from an attached garage, said Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Clint Smith.

The fire appeared to have started in the garage and moved to a living area above the structure, he said.

Five children were home at the time, ranging in age from 6 to 14, Smith said. A neighbor spotted the fire, knocked on the door and got the children out, he said. Smith was still gathering information Monday about where the parents were.

Early damage estimates were at between $60,000 and $70,000, with the heaviest damage in the garage and living area, he said.
