Sandy grass fire burns dangerously close to homes

SANDY -- A grass fire came dangerously close to some homes in Sandy.

The fire, that began in a fire pit, approached the homes backing the gully near 9000 South and 500 East. Fire crews were able to save the homes, but say they got lucky.

"If this by chance we got any of the fire embers over on the south side of the gully, it would've run away from us so fast I don't think we would have been able to keep up," said Sandy Fire Department Battalion Chief Toby Kerby. "It was just very lucky the way that this fire burned."

The fire spread from a nearby fire pit where one of the neighbors was burning a fire. Kerby says it was way too close to the dry material in the gully.

Kerby has turned the case over to Sandy Police and believes the owner will face charges and possibly other fines
