  • Attempt to Start a D.V. Program for Perry,NY

I have been involved in the cause of domestic violence for some time, especially since the death of my stepsister Elizabeth over a year ago. What does domestic violence have to do with the fire service? It can affect even a firefighter and his family in the same insidious and damaging ways as it does other people. The potential for the use of fire in a domestic abuse, in my opinion makes domestic violence a problem that should concern each and every fire fighter and his or her department. The police chief in Perry,NY told me last week that his men responded to three domestic violence calls in one day. Here is where the potential for an officer getting shot lies. This is the most dangerous type of call a police officer can respond to. It can be just as dangerous for the fire department if and when the use of fire as a weapon is also involved. That is why I have launched a campaign to get a domestic violence program going for my community of Perry,NY and invite either Denise or Tanya Brown, sisters of the slain Nicole Brown to come to Perry to speak on domestic violence in aid of launching a program, something that I feel both fire and police departments should also be involved in. It is not just the problem of the parties involved, nor just a law enforcement problem, or fire problem, it is EVERYBODY'S problem. I have lived in Perry,NY most of my life and have just recently joined my FD in an administrative and support capacity and do not remember a police officer being shot answering a dv call nor a woman butchered like Nicole Brown was in LA back in 1994 and want very much to keep it that way.
